May 2017 Patent Transaction Market Outlook with Q1 2017 Patent Market Index Released Today by GTT Group, Inc.

Monday, May 15th, 2017

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in strategic patent analysis and patent transaction services, today makes available the Q1 2017 Patent Market Index (PMI®) and Patent Licensing Index (PLI®) in the May 2017 Patent Transaction Market Report.

The PMI® added another 3.33 points in Q1 2017, continuing both a traditional Q1 rise from Q4 results and an upward trend since Q3 of 2016. This steady rise brings the PMI in line with the range of results displayed over the last three years. Secondary patent assignments also maintained consistent gradual growth. The PLI® (Patent License Index) decreased by 5% from the Q4 2016 year end level.

“GTT Group is predicting a continued incremental upward trajectory in the PMI as other acquirers enter the market driven by market adoption of breakthrough technologies (e.g. autonomous vehicles, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence) and various business necessities,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “Recently announced buying programs are indicative of the current market environment, but likely won’t impact the PMI until the end of 2017 or start of 2018.”

Intellectual Ventures was the Most Active Deal Maker in Q1 of 2017, followed by Google and Allied Security Trust. Dolby, RPX, and Stragent had an equal number of transactions to fill out the rest of the Deal Maker chart. The top Seller was Panasonic, followed by 3M, AT&T, and Samsung in a three-way tie.

Patent Transaction Market Outlook for January 2017 with Q4 2016 Patent Market Index Released Today by GTT Group, Inc.

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in strategic patent analysis and patent transaction services, today makes available the Q4 2016 Patent Market Index (PMI®) and Patent Licensing Index (PLI®) in the January 2017 Patent Transaction Market Report.

The PMI® rose over 4 points in Q4 2016, breaking the seasonal pattern of ending each year in a downturn. Even with a rise of 4.5% over the previous quarter Patent Transaction Market Report, the PMI remains at the lowest activity level recorded on the index since Q4 2013.

“Despite the market rise, the patent marketplace will continue to be defined by an oversupply of low value patents. We continue to forecast lower transaction volumes, characterized by fewer asset counts,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “Q1 2017 should reflect the traditional rise in recordings, following year-end activity in Q4 2016.”

The PLI® (Patent License Index) increased by 2.4%, closing the year 28% higher year over year. The PLI significantly outperformed the S&P 500 during 2016 which was up 12% year over year.

The Most Active Deal Maker list in Q4 2016 included RPX, Hynix, Apple, and Intellectual Ventures. The top Seller chart was filled by Hitachi, Panasonic, and AT&T in a three-way tie, with Huawei close behind.

October 2016 Patent Transaction Market Outlook released by GTT Group Including the Q3 2016 Patent Market Index

Monday, October 17th, 2016

The October 2016 Patent Transaction Market Report is released today by Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction and patent related advisory services, and includes the Q3 2016 Patent Market Index (PMI®) and Patent Licensing Index (PLI®).

The PMI® lost 10.76 points during the seasonal Q3 downturn, representing a 10.7% decline. Secondary patent assignments dropped below the year on year transfers compared to Q3 2015. The PLI® (Patent License Index) behaved contrary to the PMI and secondary market trends, rising 20% over Q3 2015, and  significantly outperformed the S&P 500.

“The Q3 PMI decline mirrors market realities, which include fewer patent transactions, and smaller asset counts,” according to Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “We expect the 4th Quarter to remain rather flat with any uptick in the PMI reflected in the first quarter of 2017.”

Google is the only company appearing on both the acquirer and seller sections of the Most Active Deal Maker list in Q3 2016. RPX remained as the top acquirer of the Most Active Deal Maker list for Q3 2016, followed by Intellectual Ventures, Acacia, Google, IP Bridge, and Philips in a five-way tie. Google headed the list of sellers on the Most Active Deal Maker list for Q3 2016, followed by Toshiba, Broadcom, Panasonic, and SK Telecom.

Friday, September 30th, 2016

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction and patent related advisory services, today makes available the Q2 2016 Patent Market Index (PMI®) and Patent Licensing Index (PLI®) in the September 2016 Patent Transaction Market Report.

The PLI® (Patent License Index) followed the trend of the PMI and secondary markets, but remained in the steady index range of previous quarters since the index introduction in 2013 even with the Q2 decline. RPX remained as the top Most Active Deal Maker for Q2 2016, followed by Intellectual Ventures.

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction advisory services, today makes available the Q4 2015 Patent Market Index and Patent Licensing Index in the February 2016 Patent Transaction Market Report.

The PMI® closed 2015 at 99.23, an 11% decline since the beginning of 2015. The result was lower than Q4 2014 and dipped below 100 for the first time since Q4 2013. This drop parallels a 27% drop in the number of transactions in Q4 2015 compared to Q4 2014.

“We do not foresee the fundamentals of the current patent market dramatically changing into 2016,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “The patent market will continue to focus on high value, highly selective transactions that fulfill acquiring companies’ strategic and tactical plans.”

GTT Group, Inc. Releases December 2015 Patent Transaction Market Outlook Including the Q3 2015 Patent Market Index

Tuesday, December 8th, 2015

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction advisory services, today makes available the Q3 2015 Patent Market Index and Patent Licensing Index in the December 2015 Patent Transaction Market Report.

GTT Group projected the PMI® to remain within the current market equilibrium during the second half of 2015, and this was reflected in relatively no upward movement in the index at the close Q3 2015 finishing at 104.14 or one-third of a point decline. GTT Group consensus is that the present equilibrium should continue through Q4 2015 and possibly into the first and second quarters of 2016.

“Increased uncertainty over appropriate patent value, especially in relation to patentable subject matter, challenges the marketplace,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “It remains to be seen whether new technology areas such as smart cars, wearables, and IOT will have a positive impact.” The Q3 2015 PLI® significantly underperformed the S&P 500, dropping 17% when compared to the S&P 500 drop of 7%.

Recent publications include GTT Group’s 2015 Patent M&A and IPO Considerations (November 2105), followed by 2015 Patent Divestment Overview: Japan Originating Divestiture (September 2015). The GTT Group 2015 Winter Report: Patent Value (January 2015) and the 2014 Annual Deal Review (February 2015) are still available. Please contact Collin Low at GTT Group for access to these reports.

GTT Group, Inc. Releases August 2015 Patent Transaction Market Outlook Including the Q2 2015 Patent Market Index

Wednesday, August 5th, 2015

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction advisory services, today makes available the Q2 2015 Patent Market Index and Patent Licensing Index in the August 2015 Patent Transaction Market Report.

The Q2 2015 PMI® fell 9.5 points to a point below the expected range of 115-105, but maintaining the current market equilibrium set in Q3 of 2014.

“The interest in high quality relevant assets is more germane than ever, characterized by intense purchaser scrutiny,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “The demand for the high quality assets that meets strategic requirements has become more acute, a reaction to recent court actions that have reduced patent royalty awards and increased patent validity requirements.”

The PLI® continued its downward trend another 2.7% compared to Q1 2015 and again underperformed the S&P 500.

This quarter, RPX leads the Most Active Deal Makers Group. Of the quarter’s top six acquirers, five were Non-Practicing Entities (NPE). Top acquirers included: Intel Corp., Intellectual Ventures, IP Bridge, Marathon Patent Group, and Tessera Technologies.

GTT Group to Sell Enhanced User Experience Patent Portfolio

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the premier provider of patent brokerage and patent transaction advisory services to information and communication technology companies worldwide, announces the availability of the Enhanced User Experience patent portfolio related to mobile notifications and enhanced search technologies.

The Portfolio’s first family of patents is applicable to controlling mobile notifications and message retrieval based on sensed conditions, such as motion, ambient light, temperature, or object proximity. User experience is improved by automatically retrieving messages on-behalf of the user or issuing notifications to the user in response to trigger conditions, such as when the device is moved, turned over, or taken out of a pocket. These patented technologies can be implemented within currently available smartphones and wearable devices using their pre-existing on-board sensors and operating system infrastructure.

The Portfolio’s second family of patents is applicable to improving search from the perspective of the user. Patented technologies within this family supplement traditional keyword searching with contextual information obtained from natural language conversations previously recorded in the background. Privacy concerns are addressed by use of an over-writing circular buffer that offloads recorded audio conversations under select conditions. The patent technologies can be implemented within the context of wearable devices, smartphones, smart televisions, and entertainment systems to lessen the burden on the user in specifying search criteria. This patent family additionally includes technologies relating to collaborative group search in which search results provided to a group of users have increased or reduced search result diversity, depending on context.

“As our devices continue to improve in performance and functionality, there are high expectations set from users about their ideal experience,” said GTT Group Director of Asset Services, Andrew Godsey, Director of Asset Services bio. “The inventors of this portfolio have done an incredible job of anticipating the trend in next gen devices and provided practical solutions for improving the user experience.”

GTT Group has prepared summaries of the patents and their market importance. To receive more information about this opportunity, please contact Andrew Godsey. All inquiries will be kept strictly confidential.

GTT Group will approach potential buyers and provide materials explaining the strategic advantages of acquiring the portfolio. In addition, GTT Group’s experts will be available to discuss the strengths of the patents and evidence of use in the market. The portfolio will be sold at a private auction in July 2015.

GTT Group, Inc. Releases May 2015 Patent Transaction Market Outlook Including the Q1 2015 Patent Market Index

Wednesday, May 6th, 2015

Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction advisory services, today makes available the Q1 2015 Patent Market Index and Patent Licensing Index results in the May 2015 Patent Transaction Market Report.

A 1.9-point gain in the Q1 2015 PMI® continued the activity level that began in mid-2014. GTT Group maintains a cautious outlook regarding further upward activity. In the Q1 2015 report, GTT Group cites several factors that may impact the PMI for the remainder of 2015 and following years.

“The major market challenge continues to be the lack of high quality relevant assets,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “Activity remains high as parties search for strategic acquisitions that protect existing and future profit centers and deliver favorable licensing terms.”

The PLI® fell 3% during the first quarter of 2015 and underperformed the S&P 500. This index, which tracks 11 publicly traded patent licensing companies, was heavily affected by major value loses in three companies, that were partially offset by strong quarterly gains in three other companies. For information related to the companies that make up the index and their relative performance please see the PTMR for further details.

Once again, Intellectual Ventures led the Most Active Deal Makers list, but major manufacturers Apple, Hynix, and Intel returned to the list along with non-practicing entities RPX and Intellectual Discovery.

The GTT Group 2015 Winter Report: Patent Value and the 2014 Annual Deal Review, are both available directly from GTT Group.
