Now more than ever patents play a critical role in companies increasing and defending their revenue streams. The worth of patents to companies has resulted in thousands of transfers of patents from company to company with values ranging from 6 figures to 9 and 10 figure deals for each transaction. For two decades GTT Group has brought transparency to this otherwise opaque market with the Patent Market Index (PMI®). The index records secondary patent transactions, the number of patents with security interests, and large patent transactions (a transfer of more than 100 IP assets) each day. Each category is an activity measure for patents. These categories are then weighted to create the PMI level which indicates the patent activity level for the day. The Daily PMI is the next evolution of the PMI which traditionally has measured patent marketplace activity on a quarterly basis. The PMI gives a daily moving average of the PMI further adding transparency to the industry. The PMI is the benchmark or bell weather index for the patent transaction market.
Many publicly traded companies own portfolios of patents. A subset of those patent holders is active in monetizing their portfolios. Of the fraction of patent-owning companies, there is a very short list of publicly traded companies whose entire or substantial portion of their business model is based on licensing efforts. The PLI® is the first pure index representing this industry. GTT Group’s goal by creating the PLI is to be able to identify both past and future trends and events that have significant impacts on the industry and shed light on the status of the patent market as a whole. GTT Group benchmarks the PLI to the S&P 500 to compare quarterly return on investment.
The S&P is a stock market index that measures the stock performance of 500 large companies listed on stock exchanges in the United States. We feature the S&P so that our audience can compare the PMI and PLI to the U.S. Stock Market.
